As composers, performers, producers and the subjects of documentaries, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr have made a remarkable contribution to the cinema over the years. The dominant figure, of course, has been Lennon. He's been impersonated by his fellow Liverpudlian Ian Hart in both Backbeat, Iain Softley's film about the Beatles in Hamburg, and The Hours and Times, Christopher Munch's picture about his 1963 trip with Brian Epstein to Barcelona, and more fleetingly in Todd Haynes's Bob Dylan movie I'm Not There. He's at the centre of a fascinating documentary on his political activities, The US vs John Lennon (2006) and haunts the shadowy edges of The Killing of John Lennon, Andrew Piddington's 2006 portrait of his assassin, Mark Chapman. Now we have Sam Taylor-Wood's feature debut, Nowhere Boy, an account of his late teens on Merseyside. Her superbly acted film stars the 19-year-old Aaron Johnson, who bears only the slightest physical resemblance to Lennon.

Jimmy and Paul are cops hunkered down across the street from a stakeout when they see a mysterious figure run across rooftops and break into a house. Seconds later, he can clearly be seen in an upper window, sitting on a toilet and reading a magazine. "What kind of a guy breaks into a house and takes a crap?" asks Paul, or words to that effect.

Stardust, based on the acclaimed illustrated novel by Neil Gaiman and Charles Vess, takes viewers to the mystical land of Stormhold, where stars walk, ships fly, and magic is real. A fantasy in the tradition of The Princess Bride, Stardust leavens its mature fairy tale with elements of romance, horror, and comedy. There's less whimsy to be found here than in The Princess Bride, but the film is likely to appeal to the same group of older children and adults that appreciated Rob Reiner's classic.
The Rebound, directed by Bart (Mr Julianne Moore) Freundlich, has been knocking around for a while, showing up in various countries across the world like a hippy traveller or a prisoner on the run, but, even though it was shot in early 2008, it still hasn’t come out in the States. Always a bad sign .
Catherine Zeta Jones plays Sandy, a suburban mother who seems to have it all — a sprawling suburban home, cheery kids, fast broadband connection — until she discovers that her husband has been cheating on her. She decamps to New York, where she does things she’s never thought of doing before: namely working. She also goes on dates with hygienically challenged men who insert dirty fingers in her mouth.
Then along comes Aram (Justin Bartha). If Sandy is learning to become tough, he’s Mr Soft: a 20-something nanny and coffee-shop worker who took Women’s Studies classes at college, reads Harry Potter novels in bed, and gets drunk after half a pint of beer. But he’s sweet, good with children – and completely boring.

I Know You Know
Cardiff-based Justin Kerrigan scored a home-grown hit with the ramshackle rave comedy Human Traffic in 1999 and then went awol – a casualty, it was rumoured, of the very lifestyle he celebrated on screen. A decade later, he has blown back from the wilderness with I Know You Know, a rites-of-passage drama that amounts to a tender, twisted valentine to his late father, Frankie. Robert Carlyle plays Charlie, a self-styled special operative who darts agitatedly between the pebbledashed estates of South Wales. His adolescent son Jamie (Arron Fuller) regards Charlie as a hero and this may well be the case. But Charlie is also jittery and unstable, a kind of Welsh cousin to Big Vern, the paranoid gangster from Viz magazine. His head buzzes with conspiracy theories; his finger itches on the trigger of his gun. When danger is looming, he instructs Jamie to recite an emergency phone number into a kettle. The kettle, he explains, is wired straight through to Special Branch.

I’m not sure if any of you follow Masterpiece theater on PBS or not. To be honest, I never did until the night of January 18 2009. It was a Sunday night at precisly 9 p.m. Nothing of interest was on. As I was looking through the guide on my digital cable, and saw that Wuthering Heights was going to be on, I figured “why not”. After all, I hold a MA in English and have read Wuthering Heights many times throughout my college career.

Kill the Irishman
Is it possible to refresh the indomitable mobster crime drama that has persisted since the ’30s classics and beyond to touchstones like the Godfather trilogy or more recent hits like “The Sopranos”? Ya betta believe it, resounds Jonathan Hensleigh’s Kill the Irishman, a hugely entertaining pastiche of potent narrative vignettes and some archival material tracking the mid-’70s criminal life and death of fearless Cleveland thug Danny Greene and his headline-grabbing exploits.
Word of mouth and critical support should kick in to drive discerning audiences into seats. Irishman’s assured, pounding, straightforward approach should also deliver to those easier-to-please, assuming they discover the film.

Red is a movie that’s better than it should be and yet isn’t as good as it could be. The jokes could be funnier, the action could be more exhilarating, the pacing could be quicker, but the film is still a success. And yet with stronger direction and a more polished script, Red could have been one of the better films of the year thanks to its strong cast. Not only do they play off each other well, but Mary Louise-Parker, John Malkovich, Brian Cox, and Helen Mirren all give terrific performances. Red gets the job done, but there’s frustration in seeing it come up as only passable.
A Toronto filmmaker who made his feature debut with the unfairly overlooked 2002 indie 19 Months, Randall Cole continues to mine a worthwhile vein of deadpan dramedy with this second effort, which opened the Slamdance fest back in January. Real Time’s amiable charm compensates for a contrived storyline, a result of the temporal constraints indicated by the title. (Surely Nick of Time, Phone Booth and 88 Minutes all prove how containing a movie’s action during its running time is an idea best left inside a pitch session.)

Until he was downsized, affable, amiable Larry Crowne (Tom Hanks) was a superstar team leader at the big-box company where he's worked since his time in the Navy. Underwater on his mortgage and unclear on what to do with his suddenly free days, Larry heads to his local college to start over.

While working an undercover prostitute sting operation to arrest a pimp named Neptune, Miami-Dade Police detectives James "Sonny" Crockett and Ricardo "Rico" Tubbs receive a frantic phone call from their former informant Alonzo Stevens (John Hawkes). Stevens reveals that he is planning to leave town, and, believing his wife Leonetta to be in immediate danger, asks Rico to check on her. Crockett learns that Stevens was working as an informant for the FBI but has been compromised. Crockett and Tubbs quickly contact the FBI Special Agent in Charge John Fujima (Ciarán Hinds) and warn him about Stevens' safety. Tracking down Stevens through a vehicle transponder and aerial surveillance, Crockett and Tubbs stop him along I-95. Stevens reveals that a Colombian cartel knew that Russian undercovers were working with the FBI from the start and had threatened that Leonetta would be murdered via a C-4 necklace bomb if he did not confess. Rico tells Alonzo that he does not have to go home. Having learned her fate, Stevens, in a state of grief, commits suicide by walking in front of an oncoming semi truck.
