Inception

“True inspiration is impossible to fake,” explains a character in Christopher Nolan’s existentialist heist film Inception. If that’s the case, then Inception is one of the most honest films ever made. Nolan has crafted a movie that’s beyond brilliant and layered both narratively and thematically. It requires the audience to take in a collection of rules, exceptions, locations, jobs, and abilities in order to understand the text, let alone the fascinating subtext. Nolan’s magnum opus is the first major blockbuster in over a decade that’s demanded intense viewer concentration, raised thoughtful and complex ideas, and wrapped everything all in a breathlessly exciting action film. Inception may be complicated, but simply put it’s one of the best movies of the year.

Life as We Know It

As 2010’s movie year marches toward the big final holiday season Hollywood releases another attempt to capture the hearts(and cash) of romantic comedy fans. Veteran TV Director Greg Burlanti’s LIFE AS WE KNOW IT is Katherine Heigl’s second release this year(the other being the Ashton Kutcher co-starrer THE KILLERS). Clearly she’s attempting to find a spot in the genre recently dominated by Sandra Bullock and Julia Roberts None since her movie break-thru role in KNOCKED UP can come close to these actresses’s rom-com classics. This film is no exception.

One Missed Call

Well folks, this is one of the big ones: One Missed Call has been named number 2 on Rotten Tomatoes’ Worst Movies of All Time list, and I’ve been putting this review off for too long. Right from the get go, I see the first thing wrong with this horror film about people receiving killer missed calls on their cells – nobody would ever call these people. They’re far too bland and characterless to ever receive any willing phone calls. But then, I guess that’s why they’re getting killed off. Let’s dive right into One Missed Call.

Born of Hope

An indie film that's been hotly awaited for quite some time now, Born of Hope is the story of Arathorn, father of Aragorn. The latest fan-made Lord of the Rings movies takes a character that is often mentioned as father to one of the most important characters in LotR, but never actually seen or heard about much.
With a very limited budget, Kate Madison and crew have produced a really good little film here. Some people have complained that it lacks the sweeping panoramic shots of mountains etc that were in both the Peter Jackson trilogy and The Hunt for Gollum, but such complaints are really missing the point of this film. It homes in on a few characters and shows their struggles against the rising tides of orcs coming out of Dol Guldor as Sauron begins to hunt for both the Ring of Power and the last remaining Heir of Isildur. Though much is explained in the story and there is considerable voiceover narration (thankfully both voiced very well and written in a very Tolkienesque manner), it does help to have some knowledge of the history of Middle Earth. (Fortunately for me I'm a bit of an anorak in that regard...)

Loaded

Judging from the packaging, the straight-to-DVD Loaded seems to be getting marketed somewhere between Layercake and The Fast and the Furious. I believe it would have been better marketed along the lines of a teen movie with guns since this film is nothing but a showcase for Jesse Metcalfe (the gardener from Desperate Housewives).

Echelon Conspiracy

Much like Watergate ushered in an era of ’70s paranoid anti-government thrillers like The Parallax View and Three Days Of The Condor, the Internet age has tapped into a new vein of paranoia about society giving itself over to sinister, all-knowing technology. The trouble is, most of these thrillers seem to have been written by Andy Rooney, born of a clueless “Hey you kids, get off my lawn” rejection of the new, rather than a more acute sense of the dangers of connectedness. Joining the scrap heap this week is Echelon Conspiracy, a generic WarGames redux that offers up the tantalizing hook of a HAL 9000 that can fit into the palm of your hand. The conflation of all networked data into some sort of omniscient “eagle eye” isn’t the worst idea for freaking out technophobic smartphone users, but unlike, say, Eagle Eye, Echelon Conspiracy doesn’t put enough conviction behind its stupidity. It’s mostly just bland.

The Red Baron

The First World War has never had the same cinematic profile as the Second; I'm not sure why. Perhaps its due to historical distance, or the fact that it was just such a miserable, muddy, shell-shocked experience, with none of the 'just war' connotations of the more recent conflict. The first technological war, it was also the end of the Edwardian Age and the beginning of the end of European colonialism. But surely there must have been some decent stories?

The Wild Hunt

Alexandre Franchi just might be a genius, and his first feature shows the same lyric creativity and the same commitment to themes of imagination he displayed in his stellar collection of short films (Fata Morgana, Troll Concerto, etc.), all while suggesting - contrary to his earlier works - that reality must eventually destroy fantasy.

13

I was amazed to see that the Jason Statham/Mickey Rourke starrer 13 had only 7 external reviews on IMDB. The film, to me, is right up there with The Fighter and The King's Speech in terms of production and acting. It has been a long, long time since a film has touched me so intensely and made me ponder how precious life is. It made me realize that no amount of money can ever match the value of life.

The Bourne Supremacy

Jason Bourne (Matt Damon) and his girlfriend Marie Kreutz (Franka Potente) have been living incognito in Goa, India for the past two years where Bourne struggles to recall the specifics of his first mission as a black ops agent. In Berlin, CIA Deputy Director Pamela Landy (Joan Allen) runs a "buy operation", spending $3 million to purchase evidence exposing the mole within the agency that stole $20 million in allocation money seven years prior. Before Landy's operative can complete the transaction, Russian FSB agent, Kirill (Karl Urban), infiltrates the building, plants a fingerprint to frame Bourne, kills Landy's operative and the seller of the information and makes off with the evidence and the $3 million. Kirill then reports back to Russian oil magnate Yuri Gretkov (Karel Roden), who sends him to Goa to finish the frame-job by assassinating Bourne. Bourne spots Kirill coming and flees with Marie in a jeep. Kirill gives chase and shoots at the vehicle to kill Bourne but kills Marie instead, causing the jeep to run off a bridge and crash into the river below. Kirill leaves, believing Bourne to be dead, but Bourne survives the accident and departs for Naples, Italy, to seek vengeance.

George of the Jungle

The film begins with an animated introduction showing a plane crash in which George, then an infant, is lost in a jungle in "the Heart of Africa" (more specifically, a region called "Bukuvu"). Over 25 years later, George (Brendan Fraser) is a Tarzan-like man, the "King of the Jungle". His friends include a sophisticated talking gorilla named Ape (voiced by John Cleese), along with a toucan named Tookie, a small capuchin monkey (played by Crystal), and an African elephant named Shep, whom he calls his "dog" (all voiced by Frank Welker).
